# How to make paper look old: a tea-stained treasure map

## Turn a white page into a pirate’s old map

Crumple the paper, dab it with a cold, wet tea bag and let it dry. Where each wet patch stops, the tea collects into a darker brown line, a tide line, which makes the paper look a hundred years old. Burnt edges stay on the screen.

## Quick facts

Age

4\+

Time

20 minutes, plus 1–2 hours drying

Mess

Medium: tea stains

Adult needed

Yes: to make the tea

You need \(cost\)

Tea bags, a bowl, paper, crayons

On screen / for real

Tea staining: both. Burnt edges: On screen only

## What you'll make

A crinkly brown map with dark-edged stains, torn edges, an island, a dotted path and an X. It works as a pirate-party invitation, a treasure hunt clue or a page from an explorer’s diary.

## In Extreme Drawing

1. **Science tab → Tea bag.** Dab it on the paper. Each dab leaves a roughly square, slightly lumpy brown blotch that soaks in; drag to keep dabbing.
2. **Let it dry**, or skip ahead with **Wait 1 hour**. The paper does the rest: each patch dries with a darker rim, the tide line. **Bake in the oven** dries it fast and leaves it wavy for good, with dark tide lines.
3. **Draw the map** with **Crayon** or **Marker**. On wet tea the marker bleeds; the crayon doesn’t.
4. **Toolbox → Fire** to burn the edges. Wet tea patches won’t light until they have dried: they just hiss. Put the flames out by patting them with the **Hand** or pouring **Water**.

**Also try:** **A week in the sun** fades the tea, and old paper yellows a little by itself with every **Wait 3 days**. In the full toolbox, a pushpin left in damp, tea-stained paper rusts, and the rust and tea together make a blue-black ink spot: the same chemistry as the iron-gall ink of old documents.

## Do it for real

**You need**

- White paper \(printer or drawing paper\)
- 2 or 3 black tea bags
- A bowl of tea, cooled completely
- A baking tray or a big plate, and kitchen paper
- Optional: a few instant coffee granules for dark spots
- Crayons, a pencil or a waterproof pen for the map

### Step by step

1. Make the teaAn adult pours hot water onto the tea bags in a bowl and leaves it until it is completely cold.
2. Crumple the paperScrunch it into a tight ball, then open it out flat. The creases soak up more tea and look old.
3. Stain itLay the paper on the tray and dab it all over with the wet tea bag, or brush the tea on. Leave a few little puddles: their edges become tide lines.
4. Add spotsSprinkle a few coffee granules onto the wet paper for dark speckles \(optional\).
5. Dry itLeave it flat to dry, an hour or two in a warm room. An adult can speed it up with a hair dryer on a low setting.
6. Tear, then drawTear the edges in little bites and rub them with a brown crayon or the used tea bag. Then draw the island, the path and the X.

Burnt edges are for the screen only

Never burn the edges of paper at home, not even with an adult watching: paper catches fast and drops burning pieces. Tear the edges and darken them with a brown crayon or a used tea bag instead; it looks just as old. Clean-up: tea stains clothes and wooden tables, so work on a tray and wipe up drips while they are wet.

## Variations to try

### Pirate party invitations

One small map per guest, rolled up and tied with string.

### A secret treasure spot

Mark the real hiding place in invisible ink, so only someone who knows the trick can find it.

### Halloween letter

A spooky old letter or a map of a haunted house, stained extra dark with coffee.

### Explorer’s diary

Stain several sheets, staple them together and fill them with drawings of a made-up island.

## In the app vs on paper

### On screen

The tea’s tide lines appear by themselves as the paper dries, and the Fire tool burns the edges in seconds without any danger. Wet patches hiss instead of burning, as real wet paper does. The tea bag and the fire are free.

### On real paper

Tea takes an hour or two to dry and its colour depends on the tea. Crumpled creases and torn edges give the real map a feel no screen has, and it is the version you can hide and hunt for.

## Why tea leaves a dark edge

When a puddle of tea dries, the water at the edge dries first and keeps pulling more water, and the brown, outwards. So the brown piles up at the edge: a tide line.

**For grown-ups.** This is the **coffee-ring effect**: the edge of a drying drop stays pinned to the paper, evaporation is fastest there, and an outward flow replaces the lost water, carrying dissolved colour \(here the tea’s **tannins**\) to the rim. Tannins also bind to the cellulose of the paper, which is why tea stains are permanent. Creases in crumpled paper soak up more liquid, so they come out darker and look worn. Iron-gall ink, used for centuries, is made from tannins and iron salts, which is why tea and rust turn blue-black together.

## Try next: what do you predict?

### A puddle or a dab?

Which leaves the darker tide line?

### Tea or coffee?

Which makes the paper look older?

### Stain it twice?

What happens if you let it dry and stain it again?

### Hot or cold tea?

Does it make a difference to the colour \(once it has cooled enough to handle\)?

## In the classroom

Tea staining fits KS2 Year 4 states of matter \(evaporation\) and history topics such as explorers and old documents. On the whiteboard, burn the edges of the map in the app and talk about why that part stays on the screen.

## Questions parents ask

How do you make paper look old with tea?

Crumple the paper, open it out, dab or brush it with cold tea and let it dry flat. Small puddles leave darker tide lines, and a few coffee granules add spots.

How long does tea-stained paper take to dry?

An hour or two flat in a warm room, overnight if it is soaked. A hair dryer on low, used by an adult, speeds it up.

Can you age paper with coffee instead?

Yes: strong instant coffee gives a darker, browner stain than tea, and a few granules sprinkled on wet paper make dark spots.

How do you make burnt edges on a treasure map safely?

Don’t use fire. Tear the edges in little bites and rub them with a dark brown crayon or a used tea bag. In Extreme Drawing you can burn them on screen.

Why does the stain have a darker edge?

As the tea dries, water flows to the edge, where it evaporates fastest, and carries the brown there. It is called the coffee-ring effect.

## Stain a map on screen

Dab the tea bag, watch the tide lines dry in, then burn the edges with the Fire tool, safely, on the screen.
